Understanding ADHD

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, self-control, and activity levels. People with ADHD may struggle to stay on task, follow through on goals, or manage impulsive behavior. While symptoms often begin in childhood, some individuals aren’t diagnosed until their teen or adult years, as signs may be mistaken for restlessness or lack of discipline. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, ADHD can impact learning, relationships, and work performance. At BrightLink Psychiatry, we specialize in accurate assessments and treatment plans designed to help individuals better understand and manage their symptoms.

Different Types of ADHD

Inattentive Type:
Individuals with this presentation often have trouble maintaining focus, following directions, or staying organized. They may appear forgetful, easily distracted, or struggle to complete tasks despite good intentions.
Hyperactive-Impulsive Type:
This type is marked by restlessness, excessive energy, and impulsive actions. Children may struggle to sit still or wait their turn, while adults might find it difficult to relax or may act before thinking.
Combined Type:
People with this presentation experience a mix of both inattentive and hyperactive symptoms, which can affect daily routines, work, and relationships.

What Causes ADHD?

Research shows that ADHD tends to run in families and is linked to differences in brain structure and neurotransmitter activity. While genetics play a major role, environmental influences during pregnancy or early childhood may also contribute. ADHD affects roughly 6–8% of the population, making it one of the most common mental health conditions worldwide.

ADHD in Adults

Many adults live with undiagnosed ADHD, often recognizing their symptoms only after years of struggling with organization, focus, or time management. Some may have adapted coping strategies that mask their challenges, while others experience ongoing frustration, anxiety, or burnout. Adults with ADHD may find it hard to stay on task, meet deadlines, or control impulsive reactions—yet with the right treatment, these difficulties can greatly improve.
Common signs may include:

  • Trouble concentrating or staying organized

  • Forgetfulness or losing things easily

  • Restlessness or difficulty relaxing

  • Interrupting others or speaking impulsively

  • Difficulty completing tasks or following instructions

  • Mood swings or irritability
